Esher Street and Toohey Road intersection upgrade - Tarragindi

Link copied

Works have started to make the Esher Street and Toohey Road intersection in Tarragindi safer for everyone.

The Esher Street and Toohey Road intersection is currently not signalised and extremely busy during peak times. Motorists are taking risks to navigate the intersection. We’re making the intersection safer and easier to get through.

Upgrade features include:

  • installing traffic signals with 3 signalised pedestrian crossing points
  • widening the Sexton Street approach to the intersection
  • installing a dedicated left-turn lane for vehicles turning left into Esher Street
  • constructing a right-turn lane on Toohey Road to allow queueing of vehicles turning right into Esher Street
  • constructing a new pathway on the eastern side of Sexton Street
  • upgrading the existing pathway on the corners of Esher Street and Toohey Road, including new kerb ramps
  • installing yellow no stopping lines on all approaches to the intersection
  • installing a new guard rail and retaining wall on the Sexton Street approach to the intersection
  • installing new road pavement, signage, line marking and landscaping.

The upgrade is funded by the Australian Government as part of the Roads to Recovery Program and Brisbane City Council.

Construction started in February 2026 and will be complete by mid-2026, weather and site conditions permitting.

Majority of works will take place at night, when traffic volumes are lowest. This will ensure everyone’s safety and also reduce the overall time to complete the works. Night works can be scheduled 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

Some works will take place during the day, 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Every effort will be made to complete particularly noisy works prior to 11pm, where possible.

If you live in the area or are travelling through the intersection, you may experience:

  • increased noise, truck movements, low level dust and vibrations, and light from mobile light towers
  • changes in traffic conditions including minor traffic delays, reduced speed limits and temporary lane closures.

Traffic control will be on site during working hours to help you move through the area.

A temporary lay down area will be established within Council verge, directly opposite the Sexton Street Park car park. This area will accommodate two site caravans and some construction materials and equipment. The space will be clearly defined and managed to ensure safe access. This approach will minimise disruption for people travelling through the area.

Some trees will be removed on the Sexton Street bend to allow construction of the new footpath. Tree removal will also support road widening in this location.

We will replant trees in the local area. This supports Council’s commitment to cooler, shadier and greener suburbs.
