Kessels Road safety improvements – Salisbury

We're making changes at the Kessels Road and Orange Grove Road intersection in Salisbury to make it safer for everyone.

  • Improved travel time reliability for all road users travelling into and out of Kessels Road.

Between 2017 and 2021, 9 crashes occurred at this intersection, resulting in 5 hospitalisations and 4 people requiring medical treatment. Most crashes occurred when motorists making a filtered right turn misjudged gaps in oncoming traffic.

We’re upgrading this intersection to improve safety. Works will include:

  • installing an additional mast arm on Kessels Road to help improve visibility of the traffic lights
  • installing a dedicated right-turn lane on Orange Grove Road 
  • updating the signal phasing to being fully controlled with a green arrow in the signal phasing.
  • realigning the crossing points and installing new pram ramps at the intersection to improve connectivity for pedestrians.

This project is proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spots Program.

  • December 2025: Project introduction
  • April 2026: Start of construction.
  • July 2026: End of construction.

Construction started from 12 April 2026 and is on track to be complete by July 2026, weather and site conditions permitting. Most of the works will take place at night, when traffic volumes are lowest. This will ensure everyone’s safety and reduce the overall time to complete the works.

Night works can take place between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

At times, day works will be required. Day works can be scheduled Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

While works are underway you may experience:

  • some noise, truck movements, low level vibration and dust
  • light from mobile light towers and flashing vehicle lights
  • changes in traffic conditions, including minor traffic delays, reduced speed limits and temporary lane closures.

Traffic management and signage will be onsite to direct people walking, riding and driving through the area.
