Sandgate Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct
We’re revitalising Sandgate Centre to boost housing and local jobs while retaining and enhancing the suburb’s unique bayside character.
About the plan
Why this plan matters
Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest-growing capital cities and we’re working with communities to help deliver new homes sooner, while protecting the lifestyle that makes our city so special.
A precinct plan updates planning rules that are used to assess new development, so growth and renewal can happen in a coordinated and strategic way. Learn more about suburban renewal precincts.
Why Sandgate Centre?
Sandgate is a much-loved bayside suburb with a strong village character. Residents enjoy easy access to local shops, cafés and community spaces that support everyday life and local jobs. With a library, parks and an aquatic centre already in place, Sandgate is well prepared to grow in a way that respects and builds on what people value most.
Convenient transport options make daily travel easier. Sandgate train station is nearby, with bus connections to Brighton, Redcliffe and Brisbane City, while the Gateway Motorway provides access to Brisbane Airport and the northern industrial area.
Sandgate’s natural spaces bring people together and support wellbeing. The foreshore, lagoons, Cabbage Tree Creek and Curlew Park offer welcoming places to relax, stay active and spend time with family and friends.
The Sandgate Centre suburban renewal project aims to build on these strengths by creating opportunities for local businesses and more homes close to shops, services and jobs. It will make everyday life more connected, convenient and vibrant, while keeping the Sandgate character that residents value.

What we're planning
Focusing on Sandgate Centre, we’re working with the community to prepare a suburban renewal precinct plan that aims to:
- increase housing choice around the centre - close to services, jobs and local businesses - for people at all stages of life, including young people, families and downsizers
- make the most of the railway station to support well connected homes, jobs and visitor activity
- support and revitalise the local and visitor economy through a balanced mix of shops, services and community uses
- reflect Sandgate’s outdoor and subtropical lifestyle through landscaping, shade and well-designed buildings.
How the plan is developed
The draft plan is informed by community input, technical studies and Queensland Government feedback.
Once it has gone through the relevant stages, the final plan, if adopted, will be included in Brisbane City Plan 2014 (City Plan) and used to guide and assess development.
