Wilston Road Suburban Corridor Modernisation - Newmarket

Link copied

Council is improving safety, access and amenity for all road users along Wilston Road.

In late 2024 and early 2025, we invited the community to share feedback about walking, riding and driving along Wilston Road. The feedback covered the section between Newmarket Road and Mina Parade.

Thank you to more than 400 people who shared feedback through our online survey, phone calls and emails.

Alongside technical data, your input helped refine designs at key locations. The updated designs improve safety, accessibility and amenity through our Suburban Corridor Modernisation program.

Council started a speed limit review for Wilston Road following community safety concerns. The review covered the section between Newmarket Road and Daisy Street.

Feedback received during consultation indicated strong concerns about vehicle speeds on Wilston Road and the surrounding area.

We’ll implement a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h on Wilston Road in early August 2025. The change applies between Newmarket Road and Daisy Street.

The Speed Management Committee endorsed the reduced speed limit. The committee includes representatives from Queensland Police, Transport and Main Roads, and Brisbane City Council.

Most people told us this intersection feels unsafe to use. Some common issues people notice include:

  • drivers are ignoring the right‑turn ban from Wilston Road into Murrell Street between 7am and 7pm. This behaviour causes traffic to back up over the railway line each day.
  • drivers crossing over to the wrong side of Murrell Street to turn right onto Wilston Road.

What we're doing

  • We’ll permanently remove the right turn from Wilston Road into Murrell Street. This includes new no right‑turn signs and an extended traffic island at the intersection.
  • Adding a raised zebra crossing in the left-turn slip lane from Wilston Street into Murrell Street.
  • Improving kerb ramps with textured surfaces to help people with vision impairment.
  • Painting new line marking.
  • Upgrading a section of the footpath on Wilston Road, across from Murrell Street.

How will these changes help?

  • Improve safety and reduce queues over the railway line, by permanently removing the right turn from Wilston Road into Murrell Street.
  • Provide safe walking and accessible crossing facilities.
  • Encourage slower vehicle movements and safer driver behaviour.

Most people told us they feel unsafe at these intersections. The main concerns were around walking and crossing safely, driver visibility and speed.

What we're doing

  • Adding traffic islands and new footpaths.
  • Improving and relocating pedestrian crossings and kerb ramps with textured surfaces to help people with vision impairment.
  • Painting new line marking, including yellow no stopping lines along Mina Parade.

How will these changes help?

  • Reduce corner cutting, improve visibility and encourage slower and safer vehicle movements.
  • Provide safe walking and accessible crossing facilities in the area.

Most people are concerned with speeds in the area.

What we're doing

  • Building an improved island at the Erneton Street and Wilston Road intersection.
  • Improving kerb ramps with textured surfaces to help people with vision impairment
  • Painting new line marking, including a threshold treatment
  • Painting new bike lane markings along Wilston Road, south of Erneton Street.

How will these changes help?

  • Provide safe walking and accessible crossing facilities in the area.
  • Encourage slower vehicle movements and safer driver behaviour.
  • Provide a dedicated bike lane for cyclists, to improve safety and separation from traffic.

Works will take place intermittently from early June to late September 2026, subject to weather and site conditions. Work hours are 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

We’ll work at night when traffic is lightest for everyone’s safety and to minimise disruption to the road network.

You’ll see us working intermittently around the project area as we coordinate activities near the railway corridor with Queensland Rail.

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice:

  • construction vehicles with reversing alarms and flashing lights
  • noise and dust from saw cutting and jackhammering
  • traffic controllers and signage to guide you safely
  • temporary lane closures and some traffic delays.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we undertake this important project.
