New year recycling resolutions
This year, go beyond 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle', build stronger habits and set positive recycling intentions with these basic sustainability practices.

For many people, the new year is a time to set goals. It is a chance to make positive changes and embrace sustainable living.
At Brisbane City Council, we believe this also applies to working towards a clean, green, sustainable future!
To help you start strong with waste disposal and recycling, we’ve made a simple list. This list will help you go beyond "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." It will also help you build better habits with these key sustainability practices. They’ll even help you save money on your household budget.
Rebates
Council has made it easier for you to reduce food waste and put more money in your pocket. Compost rebates for composting equipment like a compost bin or tumbler are $100, while a $200 rebate is on offer for food waste recycling equipment like a dehydrator system or in-sink food disposal system. With Brisbane City Council's Compost rebate program, there’s never been a better time to start saving your food scraps, composting or setting up a worm farm!
Refuse
Say no to single-use items! It’s an easy way to play our part to support our city’s sustainability. Don’t forget to carry your own reusable straws, bags and cutlery when you’re out and about.
Rethink
Do you really need that brand new desk or item of clothing? Second-hand shops stock everything you could imagine and for a fraction of the cost of buying new. It’s the best way to bag a bargain and save money! Why not plan a visit to our Geebung or Acacia Ridge Treasure Troves?
Reduce
Plastic products are on the way out. Alternatives like bamboo, metal and glass products are widely available, plus they look trendy too! Buying a reusable water bottle also helps reduce plastic waste.
Reuse
So many things we buy are just begging for a second chance instead of being thrown in the general waste bin. Why not try reusing things like takeaway containers, zip lock plastic bags and gift wrap? Not only are you keeping your budget balanced by not having to purchase these items often, but you’re ensuring reusable items aren’t put into landfill.
Repair
Your favourite dress or jeans can have a longer lease on life with just a few stitches. Consider repairing items like clothing, instead of throwing them out and buying expensive replacements to help reduce the amount of waste in landfill.
Refurbish
What’s old is new again! A simple fresh coat of paint can bring old furniture and décor back to life. It’s also a fun weekend hobby.
Repurpose
Old textiles like curtains, tablecloths and sheets can easily be repurposed for use around your house. You can turn them into bench wipes, tote bags or a door mat - use your imagination and the opportunities are endless.
Recycle
Make sure you download the Brisbane Bin and Recycling app to ensure the right thing is going into the right bin for bin collection day, and we’ll take care of it from there! The app includes a bin collection calendar and Brisbane City Council waste management tips and information.
