Gordon Road Detention Basin - Bardon
Brisbane City Council has converted the existing pond in Mt Coot-tha Forest, at the end of Gordon Road, Bardon, into a stormwater detention basin to mitigate the flooding of affected properties in the local area.
|Address||Gordon Road, Bardon|
|Project outcomes||Flood management|
|Project status||End of construction|
About the project
Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce that construction is now complete on the Gordon Road detention basin at Bardon as of early July 2018.
The existing underground stormwater pipes in the area exceeded their capacity in heavy rainfall events, resulting in flooding to properties located on the overland flow path along Gordon Road.
The detention basin slows the peak flow during a storm event, releasing stormwater at a controlled rate into the existing underground stormwater pipes.
Works involved reconstructing the existing embankment, raising its crest level by approximately 2.5 metres, reducing the size of the outlet culvert and reconstructing the existing pipe inlet located downstream of the dam. The existing bush tracks were reinstated across the wall to facilitate safe walking paths.
The detention basin will reduce the risk of flooding by detaining the peak flow during a storm event, releasing stormwater at a controlled rate into the existing underground stormwater pipes. The current pond water level will be maintained and will only rise temporarily as the basin fills during a storm. After the storm passes the basin will slowly drain returning the pond to its starting level.
Brisbane City Council would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the flooding and drainage capacity of the area.
