What is the star rating scheme for food safety?

The star rating scheme is an initiative that rates businesses on their food safety compliance.

Every licensed food business in Brisbane receives an Eat Safe Brisbane star rating from Council.

The star rating reflects how well the business complies with the Food Act 2006 and its overall food safety standards.

This means that when you eat out, you can enjoy your food knowing we’ve already checked the venue for you.

Rating not displayed

A food business may not display their star rating when the:

  • rating is less than 3 stars
  • rating is 3 or more stars, but the owner has not agreed to display the star rating
  • annual food business licence fee has not been paid
  • business has recently opened or changed owners and has not been audited yet.

Star ratings aren’t published without agreement from the business. This is due to restrictions in the Food Act 2006.

Frequently asked questions

If you can’t find a business on the Eat Safe star rating search, it may be because the business:

  • has a one-off temporary food business licence. Temporary food businesses are not eligible to participate in the Eat Safe Brisbane scheme
  • is not in the Brisbane City Council area. This may apply to businesses on the boundary of the greater Brisbane area or mobile food vendors licensed by another council in Queensland
  • is not a licensable business (e.g. convenience stores)
  • has not applied for a food business licence and is operating unlawfully. This is an offence under the Food Act 2006.

Businesses with a non-compliant star rating (2 stars or less) are not eligible to display their rating. A business may also not be displaying a star rating because it doesn’t have one. Not all food businesses qualify for the Eat Safe Brisbane program. Only licensable food businesses receive a star rating.

Public display of star ratings is not mandatory. Businesses can choose not to disclose their ratings.
