Uncover our wartime heritage - Macarthur Museum
Did you know Brisbane was home to the World War II headquarters of the Allied South West Pacific Area command? From July 1942 to October 1944, US General Douglas MacArthur commanded the war in the region from an inner-city building. Today, it is the MacArthur Museum.
The museum is in the MacArthur Chambers building on Edward Street, at the end of Queen Street Mall. Inside are wartime documents and artefacts. One highlight is the conference table used by MacArthur and his staff. The museum explores children’s wartime experiences and how restrictions affected food, fuel, clothing, and personal freedoms.
The MacArthur Museum is open from 10am-3pm (last entry at 2.30pm) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
