During the Elizabethan period, fencing was a means of settling personal disagreements - particularly about personal honour and reputation - and only rarely used on the battlefield. A skill requirement of the upper-class nobility, gentlemen were trained in the art of fencing from childhood.
Fencing featured in many of Shakespeare’s plays (e.g. Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet) as it was a common part of life, relatively safe to show on stage, and very visually impressive.
Grab a blanket, a glass of mead, a picnic lunch and find your own patch of grass from which to enjoy the fencing performances by Prima Spada. Why not join in one of the learn to fence sessions.
