About the project

Council is installing public safety devices in key locations around the city to improve separation between the roadway and pedestrians in the city centre. These works will be undertaken in King George Square from late July to late 2019.

Installation works will take place between 7pm and 5am, Monday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Installation works will need to occur at night when vehicle and pedestrian traffic movements are low and to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

Council will endeavour to complete noisier construction activities such as jack-hammering and saw-cutting before 1am.

Council is committed to keeping the local community informed of construction activity in their area and will provide further advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption such as particularly noisy works or out-of-hours activities.

Council will provide further information to the community about other locations as information becomes available.

Adjustments to stairs in King George Square

Council is undertaking works on the stairs on the eastern side of the square. These works involve removing a section of the stairs and installing a new garden bed and glass balustrade. These works will remove a pedestrian pinch point, improving access through the square (particularly during events) and add new greenery to this popular public space.

Works will be underway from mid-September to late November 2019. Construction will occur at night between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday, when pedestrian movements are low and to minimise impacts on nearby businesses.

During construction, fencing will be in place around the work area. Access to local businesses will be maintained at all times.

Impacts during construction

We apologise in advance for any disruption caused and thank you for your patience while we complete this work.

Residents and businesses in close proximity to the works may experience the following:

  • noise and some dust generated from the installation activities. Please be assured that Council will use environmental controls and make every effort to minimise disruptions during these works.
  • some localised pedestrian restrictions, which will be managed through on-site traffic controllers. Access for authorised vehicles will also be maintained during the works.

Access will be maintained through King George Square, and to City Hall, local businesses, public transport and events throughout construction. The construction schedule for installation of the devices will work around events in King George Square to minimise impact to the community.
