Pallara Stormwater Infrastructure Project – Stage 1

Following technical and environmental investigations, Brisbane City Council is constructing stormwater infrastructure at Pallara to support future development and manage local overland flow, while minimising impact on the environment.

About the project

As part of these works, Council will be:

  • constructing an approximately 410-metre-long vegetated channel, with a channel top width of approximately 10 metres and a meandering low flow channel at the base, running through a section of 38 Sweets Road and 102 Vied Road, Pallara
  • constructing a new access track between Sweets Road and Vied Road (that will become the alignment for a future bikeway/bike path/shared path)
  • upgrading the Vied Road culverts to three reinforced concrete pipes, 600mm in diameter, between the properties at 102 and 101 Vied Road, Pallara
  • relocating the existing underground services on Vied Road during the culvert upgrade works, including telecommunications and a water main
  • constructing an approximately 1-hectare wetland on 101 Vied Road, consisting of an initial sediment basin, marshes, and open water zones, with low flow pipes discharging into natural depressions to recharge groundwater on 151 Brookbent Road.

Project goals

The Pallara Stormwater Infrastructure Project – Stage 1 will deliver the first stage of required stormwater infrastructure works to:

  • maintain local overland flow for properties in the area
  • facilitate further development in the area
  • improve flood immunity of Vied Road
  • improve water quality outcomes
  • enable potential future stages of trunk stormwater infrastructure to feed into this network.

Project timing

The works will commence in mid-May 2023 and are expected to be completed by mid-2024, weather and site conditions permitting.

The works will take place between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with Saturday works as required. Some out-of-hours works may be required and Council will provide advance notice to the community prior to the works starting.

Impacts during construction

During construction, you can expect:

  • fencing around the staged construction areas while these works are completed
  • temporary road closures while the culverts on Vied Road are upgraded
  • noise, dust and increased vehicle movements, with reversing beepers and flashing lights in the area.

Due to workplace safety regulations reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

We have chosen the stormwater alignment to protect important habitat with high ecological value, but vegetation and tree removals are still necessary.

All works will be carried out in accordance with relevant environmental guidelines and approvals, and vegetation impacts will be offset in accordance with Council's environmental policies and relevant legislative requirements, including local replanting and providing koala habitat.

Council values your patience and cooperation while we undertake these important works.

Project Design

Council investigated a number of options for stormwater drainage and alignments, between Sweets Road and Vied Road in Pallara, to manage localised overland flow in the area and cater for projected further developments upstream and with the least impact on the environment, including flora and fauna.

Following technical and environmental investigations, Council established that a combination of drainage pipes, wetlands and open channel was the most appropriate solution to manage stormwater flows in the area.

An alignment through land between Sweets Road and Vied Road has been selected to protect important habitat of high ecological value while avoiding existing adjacent contaminated land which may impact water quality.

    Future stages

Further stages of the Pallara stormwater infrastructure project are subject to future funding allocations, citywide priorities and development agreements in the area. Further information will be provided as information becomes available.

The Pallara Stormwater Infrastructure Project – Stage 1 is an integral component of the proposed Pallara Open Space Network Plan. The open space network plan proposes a connecting waterway, green space and active transport network between the District Sports and Recreation Park and District Open Space Park, in Pallara. Further information will be provided as information becomes available.
