Disaster management plans

Brisbane City Council has created several disaster management plans to help residents and businesses prepare, respond and recover from various hazards, weather events and emergencies.

Local Disaster Management Plan

The Brisbane City Council Local Disaster Management Plan provides an outline for prevention, preparation, response and recovery arrangements in our community and in partnership with other levels of government.

The focus is to minimise the effects of a disaster by:

  • outlining the disaster management system
  • specifying roles and responsibilities
  • addressing all phases of disaster management
  • providing a framework for internal procedures for our most likely threats such as severe storms, floods and fires.

Animal management planning for disasters

Following the January 2011 floods and recommendations from the Flood Commission Inquiry, Council worked with the Queensland Government and the RSPCA on a set of guidelines to help the commercial animal industry develop a plan to deal with any disasters that may affect their premises.

Commercial providers in the animal management industry include, but are not limited to zoos, commercial stables, boarding kennels and catteries, pet shops and wildlife handlers.

The Emergency Preparedness Guideline for the Commercial Animal Management Industry is a guide aimed at commercial business owners in the animal management industry who wish to develop a disaster management plan or update their existing plans.

The guideline helps business owners consider things such as when and where they should evacuate, and what they would do if their business had to close for a period of time.
