Advertising devices

Notice of new local law

Council has by resolution on 18 May 2021 made the Advertising Devices Local Law 2021. Find out more about the new local law.

Advertising devices

The Advertising Devices Local Law 2021 regulates advertising devices in Brisbane. Advertising devices includes all temporary and permanent signs and their supporting structures serving for information, advertisement, etc regardless of if the content is of a commercial nature. However an advertising device does not include:

  • an umbrella, marquee or portable shade structure that displays advertising where the umbrella, marquee or portable shade structure is used for the purpose it was designed and manufactured for
  • advertising displayed on a vehicle or vessel where the advertising is not the primary use of the transportation
  • skywriting or sign-writing by an aircraft
  • official traffic signs installed in accordance with the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995.

All advertising devices in Brisbane need an approval unless they are a permitted advertising device or a prohibited advertising device. To find out if your advertising device is permitted, prohibited, or requires an approval, you will first need to find the facts about the proposed advertising device location to identify the City Environment your property is in and any other constraints.

Permitted advertising devices

To make it easier for businesses and organisations to advertise their services, products, promotions or events, Council has designated certain advertising devices as permitted advertising devices.

Prohibited advertising devices

To protect the amenity of the area, ensure public safety and respect the visual rights of other property owners, some advertising devices are prohibited. An application to install, display or erect a prohibited advertising device cannot be made to Council. Further it is an offence to display a prohibited advertising device. Find out more about prohibited advertising devices.

Advertising devices requiring approval

All advertising devices require Council approval other than those that are designated as permitted advertising devices or prohibited advertising devices. Find about more about what is required to apply for a new advertising device approval or to amend an existing approval.

Election signs

Election signs may be displayed without Council approval where meeting certain requirements.
