Important information

Information on this site is not intended to be used to determine whether advertising is acceptable in a given situation. This site merely provides further illustrations of some types of advertisements illustrated in Schedule 1 of the Advertisements Local Law 2013 and a snapshot of special conditions that Brisbane City Council will always impose on permits for signs of the types illustrated.

When assessing an advertisement application or investigating a compliance issue, Council's Compliance and Regulatory Services officers will treat each proposal or advertisement on its own merits, having regard to the requirements of Advertisements Local Law 2013 and Advertisements Subordinate Local Law 2005 applicable to its purpose, nature and location.

Permitted signs

Awning fascia sign

An advertisement painted on or attached to the front of an awning or verandah.

Special conditions

  • an awning fascia sign must be contained within the outline of a fascia and must not exceed 600 millimetres in height.

Blind or canopy sign

An advertisement painted on or otherwise affixed to solid or flexible material suspended from the edge of an awning, verandah or wall.

Special conditions

  • a blind or canopy sign must be compatible with the blind/canopy and building on which it is exhibited
  • a blind or canopy sign is to have a minimum clearance of 2.4 metres between any rigid part of the blind and a footway surface, and 2.1 metres clearance between any flexible part of the blind and a footway surface.

Business promotion sign

A business promotion sign is a temporary advertisement advertising an auction, retail sale, business promotion or the like.

Special conditions

  • the maximum area of a business promotion sign is 4 square metres
  • a business promotion sign may be exhibited only on the premises on which the advertised activity is taking place
  • not more than one business promotion sign may be exhibited per street frontage of a property
  • a business promotion sign must not utilise electronic display components.

Commercial flag sign

A cloth or similar non-rigid fabric hung from a pole to advertise or identify a commercial establishment.

Special conditions

  • a commercial flag sign is to have an area not greater than 5 square metres and must not be displayed so that it is more than 6.5 metres above the ground.

Community event sign (banner)

A community event sign is a temporary non-illuminated advertisement promoting short-term events such as a fete, fair, or festival for charitable, religious, educational, child care, sporting organisations or the like. A community event banner may be exhibited on designated land other than where the event takes place. Designated land means public lands designated by Council as suitable for the display of advertisements for community events and not-for-profit purposes.

Special conditions

  • the banner must be of non-rigid material suspended at both ends and having a maximum area of 8 square metres
  • a community event banner may be exhibited for a period of 14 days prior to the event advertised, plus the day of the event
  • a community event banner is to be removed by the end of the day following the event.

Community event sign (directional)

A community event sign is a temporary non-illuminated advertisement advertising short-term events such as a fete, fair, or festival for charitable, religious, educational, child care, sporting organisations or the like.

Special conditions

  • a maximum of 20 directional community event signs, each having a maximum area of 0.6 square metres, may be exhibited for a period of 14 days prior to the event advertised, plus the day of the event
  • directional community event signs are to be removed by the end of the day following the event
  • directional community event signs are not to be placed on any part of a road including a footway, median strip, traffic island and roundabout.

Community event sign (on site of the event)

A community event sign is a temporary non-illuminated advertisement promoting short-term events such as a fete, fair, or festival for charitable, religious, educational, child care, sporting organisations or the like.

Special conditions

Community event signs are to be located on the site of an event or the property of the organisation holding the event and may include:

  • a banner type sign of non-rigid material suspended at both ends and having a maximum area of 8 square metres
  • a rigid type sign which would otherwise be a pole sign, wall sign, boundary fence sign or ground sign having a maximum area of 2.4 square metres
  • a vertical banner building sign or vertical banner freestanding sign having a maximum area of 2.4 square metres
  • bunting and streamers.

Not more than 1 of either a banner or rigid type community event sign may be exhibited for each frontage of a site.

A community event sign must not be able to be illuminated.

A community event sign on the site of an event may be exhibited not more than 2 weeks prior to the event advertised and must be removed by the end of the day following the event.

Construction project directory sign

A construction project directory sign is for the display of a brief description of the construction project including information about the developer, the builder, the project manager, the construction manager, the architect, engineering consultants and other consultants.

Special conditions

  • the maximum area of a construction project directory sign is 20 square metres per street frontage of a property.

Construction site sign

An advertisement attached to a structure or building under construction or to on-site construction equipment such as a crane.

Special conditions

  • a construction site sign is to have a maximum area of 20 square metres and is to display only the name or logo of the owner or developer of the construction project or of the construction company.

Construction site fence sign

A construction site fence sign is an advertisement painted or otherwise affixed flat on a temporary safety fence of a construction site.

Special conditions

  • a construction site fence sign is to display only information related to the project under construction, for example, the project developer, construction company, proposed uses or completion date
  • the maximum area for a construction site fence sign is 1 square metre for each metre of the length of the fence to which it is affixed
  • the area of a construction site fence sign excludes the area of any poster panel which may have been designated by Council for the posting of fly poster signs and the area of any artworks on the fence such as murals.

Display home & estate sales sign

An advertisement to facilitate the sale, auction or leasing of a group of dwellings or building sites.

Special conditions

  • subject to the following condition, not more than one display home and estate sales sign having a maximum area of 3 square metres may be exhibited per builder or developer whose product is on display in the group of dwellings or site
  • a double sided sign having a maximum area of 6 square metres per face, or a single sided sign having a maximum area of 12 square metres, may be erected where a number of contiguous dwellings are being marketed concurrently. Not more than one such sign may be exhibited per 100 metres of street frontage.

Election sign

An election sign is a temporary advertisement advocating for or against the election of a candidate or candidates or a registered political party in respect of:

  • a Commonwealth Government election campaign
  • a State Government election campaign
  • a Brisbane City Council election campaign.

It also includes election signs with an electronic display component and a mobile vehicle election sign.

Furniture advertising sign

Furniture advertising is the signage displayed on dining furniture, such as umbrellas and wind breaks at outdoor dining facilities.

No specific conditions.

Home business sign

A small advertisement identifying the names and/or trade, business or calling of the occupants of a home business premises.

Special conditions

  • a home business sign may not be illuminated
  • a home business sign may be painted, affixed to a wall or fence or freestanding
  • the area of a home business sign may not exceed 0.6 square metres
  • a home business sign must satisfy all self assessable planning scheme code requirements.

Information sign

An advertisement providing information for the use of facilities or features of a site (such as an "entrance" or "parking" sign, or a menu board for a drive-thru), and for which no commercial benefit is provided or derived.

Special conditions

  • the maximum area of an information sign is 2 square metres
  • an information sign is to contain no commercial or corporate advertising other than the name, logo or slogan of an organisation having tenure of the property or control of the land where the sign is exhibited
  • the name or logo is to comprise not more than one third of the area of an information sign
  • the number of information signs on a site will be limited to those considered by Council to be necessary to communicate the information.

Newsagency sign

A small non-illuminated, temporary, movable advertisement at the side of a footway advertising newspapers or periodicals for sale in a newsagency.

Special conditions

  • the area of a newsagency sign may not exceed 0.6 square metres
  • a newsagency sign must be attached to or placed against the front of the premises where the newspapers or periodicals are for sale
  • a newsagency sign must not be able to be illuminated.

Projecting flag sign

A double faced advertisement is at right angles to a wall.

Special conditions

  • a projecting flag sign is to have a maximum area of 0.3 square metres per face
  • not more than 4 such advertisements are to be exhibited per site and are to be positioned no closer than 2 metres to each other
  • a projecting flag sign is to have a minimum clearance of 2.4 metres between any rigid part of the flag and a footway surface and 2.1 metres clearance from the pavement to any flexible part of the flag.

Real estate sign

A temporary advertisement to facilitate the sale, auction or rental of a property or properties.

Statutory sign

Advertisement displayed pursuant to the authority or requirements of an Act of Parliament of the State or Commonwealth or local law.

Special conditions

  • a statutory sign must be exhibited in accordance with the provisions of the legislation under which the sign is required.

Temporary bunting and streamers

Temporary bunting and streamers is the short-term use of bunting and streamers (as described elsewhere in this subordinate local law) for an event such as a fete, fair, festival or other special event, not including an election campaign.

Special conditions

  • temporary bunting and streamers may be displayed for a period of no more than two weeks prior, and on the day or days of the event
  • temporary bunting and streamers are to be removed by the end of the day on which the event concludes.

Under awning sign

An advertisement hanging under an awning or verandah.

Special conditions

  • an under awning sign must be oriented at right angles to the building frontage
  • an under awning sign must be no greater than 2.5 metres long, 0.5 metres high and 0.3 metres deep
  • the length of an under awning sign must not exceed 75% of the width of the awning or verandah to which it is attached and must not project beyond the outer edge of the awning or verandah
  • an under awning sign is to have a minimum clearance of 2.4 metres between its lowest part and the footway surface
  • an under awning sign must be centrally located along the frontage of the shop or tenancy it advertises and, in the case of a shopping arcade, one additional such sign may be exhibited at the arcade entrance
  • an under awning sign must not be closer than 3 metres to another under awning sign, nor closer than 1.5 metres to a side boundary of a property or tenancy.

Vertical banner freestanding sign

A vertical banner freestanding sign is an advertisement of non-rigid material normally fixed at the top and bottom to brackets extending from a freestanding pole or pole attached to a relocatable base.

Special conditions

  • the maximum area of each face of a vertical banner freestanding sign is 2.5 square metres
  • the maximum width of such a Sign is 750 millimetres, and the topmost support must not be more than 5 metres above the ground
  • a vertical banner freestanding sign must be erected only within the boundaries of a site
  • such signs are to be not less than 6 metres apart, nor closer than 3 metres to a side or rear boundary.

Window sign

A window sign is an advertisement displayed on or through a display window.

Special conditions

  • a window sign must not exceed 25% of the area of the glass panel or panels on which it is exhibited and be no larger than 2 square metres.

Changeable message sign

A changeable message sign is an advertisement that allows the content to be changed manually or mechanically.

Special conditions

  • not more than one double-faced changeable message sign, having a maximum area of 2.4 square metres per face may be displayed per street frontage of a property

Community infrastructure sign

An advertisement which is erected or installed in collaboration with Council for the purpose of facilitating the provision of desirable community facilities and infrastructure such as street furniture.

Construction site building wrap

High quality graphic images on large banners mounted on the scaffolding of construction sites to improve the visual amenity and festive atmosphere of the city.

Requires full assessment.

Created awning fascia sign

An advertisement attached to an extending beyond a fascia of an awning.

Requires express assessment.

Ground sign less than 6 square metres

A monolithic advertisement with an area less than 6 square metres which, in effect, sits on or rises out of the ground and may be displayed within a developed landscaped environment.

Requires express assessment.

Ground sign more than 6 square metres

A monolithic advertisement with an area more than 6 square metres which, in effect, sits on or rises out of the ground and may be displayed within a developed landscaped environment.

Requires full assessment.

High-rise building sign

An advertisement naming or identifying a high rise building by the use of a logo or the like.

Requires full assessment.

Mobile motor vehicle sign

A mobile motor vehicle sign is an advertisement displayed on a motor vehicle where the display of the advertisement is the primary use of the vehicle but does not include a mobile vehicle election sign.

Pole sign

A free-standing advertisement on one or more vertical supports.

Requires full assessment.

Projected image sign

An illuminated sign projected onto a display surface as a static or moving image.

Requires express assessment.

Projecting sign

A double faced advertisement projecting at right angles to a wall.

Road banner sign

A non-rigid advertisement suspended across a road.

Requires full assessment.

Roof sign less than 5 square metres

An advertisement with an area less than 5 square metres positioned on the roof of a building (includes signs known as sky signs).

Requires express assessment.

Roof sign more than 5 square metres

An advertisement with an area more than 5 square metres positioned on the roof of a building (includes signs known as sky signs).

Requires full assessment.

Temporary inflatable sign

Any inflatable device.

Requires full assessment.

Transport infrastructure sign

An advertising sign painted or otherwise affixed to a transport structure, such as the abutments, piers or spans of an over-bridge.

Requires full assessment.

Vertical banner building sign

An advertisement of flexible material normally attached at the top and bottom to brackets projecting from a building.

Requires full assessment.

Wall sign less than 5 square metres

An advertisement with an area less than 5 square metres painted on or otherwise attached flat to a wall of a building or to another structure such as a fuel storage tank.

Requires express assessment.

Wall sign more than 5 square metres

An advertisement with an area more than 5 square metres painted on or otherwise attached flat to a wall of a building or to another structure such as a fuel storage tank.

Requires full assessment.

Generally inappropriate

Billboard sign

A freestanding display surface, which may be positioned on the ground or mounted on one or many vertical supports.

Requires full assessment.

Boundary fence sign

An advertisement painted or otherwise affixed to a fence along the boundary of a site.

Requires full assessment.

Footway sign

A portable, freestanding advertisement, normally supported by an 'A' or inverted 'T' frame and typically displayed on a footway.

Garage sale sign

A temporary advertisement for a household garage sale.

Requires full assessment.

Motor vehicle sales bunting

A series of small flags or pennants suspended from a rope or cable and is used to decorate a motor vehicle sale yard.

New estate sales sign

A new estate sales sign is an advertisement to direct attention to the sale of residential properties in newly subdivided parts of the city, where the streets are not shown in printed street directories.

Pylon sign

A display surface which is higher than it is wide It can be on the ground or mounted on one or more vertical supports.

Title

Sporting field fence sign

A sporting field fence sign is an advertisement painted or otherwise affixed to the inward side of a fence around a sporting field.

Special conditions

  • a sporting field fence sign or a similar advertisement in a sports club, arena, stadium or the like must be inward facing and be primarily directed at the users of the facility.

Signwritten roof sign

An advertisement painted on a roof.

Requires full assessment.

Prohibited

Above awning sign

An advertisement above an awning, verandah roof or the like.

Bunting and streamers

A series of small flags or pennants suspended from a rope or a cable, and streamers are long suspended ribbons of cloth or similar non-rigid material.

Inflatable sign

Any fixed or captive envelope, balloon, blimp or kite, whether a cold air inflatable or lighter than air aerial device.

Off-site directional sign

An advertisement directing attention to an activity on another site, where the advertisement is not a new estate sales sign provided for elsewhere in the policy.

Vehicle sign (standing)

An advertisement displayed on a vehicle where the display of the advertisement is the primary use of the vehicle and the vehicle is parked for more than five minutes or is left unattended in a public place.
