We're developing a master plan to transform the Mt Coot-tha precinct into a world-class ecotourism destination.

Brisbane City Council will protect and transform the Mt Coot-tha precinct into a world-class ecotourism destination.

About this project

We will develop a long-term vision and master plan for the precinct, which includes:

Mt Coot-tha precinct is an iconic destination and prized natural asset that receives more than one million visitors every year.

The long-term vision will focus on protecting Mt Coot-tha precinct's native areas, while exploring opportunities for new nature-based destinations and attractions.

This project will establish a lasting legacy that enhances the Mt Coot-tha precinct experience for residents and visitors. It will be delivered for Council by the Brisbane Sustainability Agency.

Opportunities to be explored

Mt Coot-tha Lookout improvements

We'll consider what's required to make this iconic landmark even better.

Precinct planting

Tree planting and revegetation to support wildlife and provide shade.

Safer access road

Turn Sir Samuel Griffith Drive into a one-way loop road, reserving a lane for cyclists.

Walk among the tree-tops

An accessible tree-top walk to cater for everyone.

Night activation in Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha

We'll explore introducing a new night-time light show at this venue.

Wilderness walking trail

170-kilometre Brisbane Wilderness Trail to connect Mt Coot-tha to Mount Archer.

Better facilities

New and improved picnic areas, including pop-up cafes.

Quarry transformation

A long-term vision for transforming Mt Coot-tha Quarry at its end of life.

Council recently investigated the future of Mt Coot-tha Quarry as part of the quarries visioning project. We found that the quarry has the capacity to continue operations for another 10 years.

The quarry has been operating since the mid-1890s and still supplies 96 per cent of asphalt aggregate for Brisbane roads.

Community consultation identified support for:

  • enhancing the natural environment
  • new tourism attractions
  • outdoor activities, venues and off-road cycling opportunities.

Planetarium upgrade

Reimagination and revitalisation of the iconic Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium to meet future needs.

Glamping

Creation of a sustainable nature retreat, including eco-tourism glamping.

New mountain bike track

Development of a mountain bike skills development track.

Stage 1

Council's 2025-26 Budget includes funding to plan and design:

  • an upgrade of the 50-year-old Tropical Dome attraction in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha
  • new picnic shelters at the popular Brush Box picnic area in Mt Coot-tha Reserve.
