About the project

Council is giving the community more to see and do in a clean and green Brisbane by creating more opportunities for recreation in Blackwood Street Park in Rochedale. As Brisbane continues to grow, it is important to ensure that our parks continue to meet the recreational needs of residents.

Blackwood Street Park is currently an open space without park facilities. Council is looking to create a local recreation park, shaped by the local community, to provide green space for residents and opportunities for activity and relaxation. The proposed enhancements aim to ensure the park caters to the growing needs of the community and suits the character of the local area.

A draft concept plan has been developed which incorporates feedback previously collected from the community. It includes:

  • a large central open space for play and informal sporting activities
  • a 100-metre-long walking and scooter circuit through the park
  • playground equipment
  • picnic tables with shelters
  • water drinking bubblers
  • shade trees
  • picnic nodes under shade trees.

Park naming

Council received a proposal to name the park 'Fischer Family Park' after a family who has historical significance in the area.

The Fischer family were early settlers in the area around the turn of the twentieth century, farming the land close to the intersection of Miles Platting and Gardner Roads.

When considering names for the suburb of 'Rochedale', one of the names put forward was 'Fischerdale'. The name of another early settler to the area was chosen instead.

Consultation and project timing

Thank you to all local residents who provided feedback on planning for Blackwood Street Park.

Council used community feedback to decide on the park name and to help inform the final concept plan for Blackwood Street Park.

Council will keep the community updated about timing to deliver Blackwood Street Park, Rochedale, which is scheduled for completion by June 2022.
