Active School Travel program

We know children want to cycle or scooter to school in Brisbane, yet only around 3% do. We want more students to ride to school and we want them to have the skills, confidence and experience to ride safely.

AST schools in their first year of the program have the opportunity to access free bike and scooter skills training sessions, courtesy of the Active School Travel program. The 90-minute bike skills and 60-minute scooter skills sessions are conducted by qualified coaches and students learn riding skills like braking, steering control, signalling, road crossing and footpath etiquette. Offered as an incursion, sessions are conducted in school time, on school grounds.

Year 4 – 6 students and other students who regularly ride to school

Prep – Year 3 and other students who regularly scoot to school
Session duration

90 minutes (maximum 3 sessions per day) in school time

60 minutes (maximum 5 sessions per day) in school time
Venue School oval

Large, preferably undercover area with hard surface (eg school hall, tennis courts, undercover play area)

Skills required

Students must already be able to ride a bike without training wheels. This is a skills session, not a learn to ride lesson

Equipment required by students BYO bike and helmet

BYO scooter and helmet but some scooters and helmets are available to borrow

Bike and scooter skills training is fully funded by Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel Program and places are limited. Be quick to secure your place!
