About the project

Council is actively managing the climbing facilities at the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs through monitoring and regular maintenance to ensure safe facilities are provided.

Seven of the bollards were removed in July 2021 and an extra bollard had been previously removed. The eight bollards will be replaced in three different areas:

  • one in the vicinity of Paton Street
  • two in the vicinity of Walmsley Street at the Nursery Cliffs
  • five in the vicinity of Llewellyn Street.

These works are part of a rolling program of works to inspect, maintain and replace the bollards at the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs. Updates will be provided prior to the closure of bollards.

Construction activities

These works are anticipated to start from 4 November 2021 and are expected to take two weeks to complete, weather and site conditions permitting. Works will occur between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

Replacement of the bollards requires drilling and installation of a stainless steel bollard, which is then filled with grout.

Following the installation of the new bollards, they will remain fenced off for a week to allow for curing time and strength testing before being opened to the climbing community.

In order to facilitate these works, an exclusion zone will be set up for two weeks around the bollards being installed, and at the base of the cliffs. The remaining bollards and cliff face will remain operational during the works for climbers to use.

Throughout the works, the local community can expect rolling temporary footpath and carpark closures at the top of the cliffs, as works occur at the three areas where bollards are being replaced. Detours will be in place around the works areas and there will be some construction related noise and dust.

Council will also undertake investigation works from 22 November 2021 to further assess other bollards across the wider cliff area for future maintenance and replacement works. These works will take approximately two days to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

Council appreciates the popularity of these facilities among Brisbane’s rock-climbing community and the adjacent park space for local residents and visitors to our city. We appreciate your understanding during these works.
