Start of construction - stage 2
About the project
Stage two of the Manly Road upgrade, located between New Cleveland Road and Wondall Road in Wakerley, will commence in mid-March 2021 and take up to five months to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.
This project continues on from stage one works undertaken in late-2020. Stage one works included the installation of a 330-metre section of shared path and formalising a 180-metre section of road edge with new kerb on the southern side of Manly Road, west of the sports park, and some landscaping of this area.
The Manly Road Upgrade is jointly funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and Brisbane City Council.
The Manly Road upgrade project will improve safety and provide clearer road delineation for motorists, while providing improved connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians accessing the local area and cycling network.
Stage two works will include:
- watermain relocation works on the southern side of Manly Road
- relocating and upgrading the inbound bus stop
- continuation of a 2.5m shared path up to the Bulimba Creek crossing
- realigning centre median islands
- formalising the road edge with the installation of new kerb
- resurfacing of the inbound road lanes between Wondall Road and New Cleveland Road
- road line marking.
A small site laydown area will be established in close proximity to the work area, on the corner of New Cleveland Road and Manly Road in Wakerley. This area will be reinstated following the completion of these works.
Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. When required works may be undertaken at night between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday, when traffic volumes are lowest and to ensure the safety of workers.
Tree and vegetation impacts
Council has identified 50 trees that will need to be removed as part of the Manly Road upgrade project. The tree removals include 11 small trees, 28 medium trees and 11 large trees. These trees are being removed in consultation with a Council arborist and all works undertaken in accordance with Council’s offset policies and legislative requirements, including eight new trees and 180 native tubestock planted within the project vicinity. Council is committed to minimising any impact on the environment.
Bus stop impacts
The inbound bus stop #6101, Manly Road at Nestle Inn stop 52/46, will be relocated approximately 40 metres towards New Cleveland Road. The relocation of this bus stop prioritises network efficiency, sightlines, safety and bus movements as well as meeting accessibility requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002.
While works on the bus stop are carried out, temporary bus stops will be in place.
Local businesses in close proximity to the site may experience some construction impacts associated with these works, including noise, dust, increased lighting, traffic delays and reduced speed limits through the construction site.
Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community during these works. Council is committed to keeping local residents informed and will provide advance notification of any works likely to cause increased disruption.
