About the project

Council is giving the community more to see and do in a clean and green Brisbane by re-establishing a sport and recreation precinct at Nudgee Recreation Reserve.

The reserve has a long sporting history dating back to the 1940s, with evidence of cricket and football being played on the site. Improvements to the reserve will deliver much-needed sporting and recreation facilities in the area.

The Nudgee Recreation Reserve district sports park will complement the growing park network in the north-eastern suburbs of Brisbane and provide an outdoor setting for more structured sporting activities like touch football, cricket and soccer.

The Nudgee Recreation Reserve project will include the following improvements:

  • shared use sporting fields that will cater to multiple sports including touch football, cricket and soccer
  • fitness equipment and shared paths for walking, running and cycling
  • BMX track
  • sports field lighting to improve nighttime visibility and safety for park users
  • new car park with more than 200 spaces, including bays for people with a disability and motorcycles
  • new clubhouse with change rooms, toilets, canteen, storage and meeting rooms
  • new amenities including:
    • a local playground ancillary to the sports fields
    • shelter, picnic settings and a barbecue facility
    • dog off-leash area.

Community feedback, along with site investigation outcomes, has helped shape the final concept plan for this district sports park facility.

Investigation works

Investigation and site compaction testing works will started in late June 2020 and will be completed by late July, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The investigation works will generally involve compaction testing and vibration monitoring activities. The compaction testing will provide important engineering data required to mitigate the risks of potential future site settlement. These works will require the use of a high energy compaction roller and support vehicle.

A large quantity of suitable fill will be transported and stockpiled at the Nudgee Recreation Reserve project site for later reuse to achieve design levels.

The transport and stockpiling works are expected to commence in late July 2020 and will continue until mid-March 2021.

Ongoing monthly stockpile maintenance works will continue until the future commencement of construction of the Nudgee Recreation Reserve.

While the Nudgee Recreation Reserve will remain open throughtout these works, some areas will need to be fenced off temporarily for safety reasons while works take place.

Access through the Nudgee Recreation Reserve via Elliott Road to Railway Street will continue to be accessible at all times.

Workplace health and safety measures and relevant environmental controls will be in place throughout the testing activities.

Residents and businesses close to the area may see workers onsite and experience some construction noise, dust, vibration and increased truck movements. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Council apologises in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause and will make every effort to minimise disruption during these investigation works.

Next steps

The concept plan will now progress to the detailed design phase. Following this phase, Council will seek permits and approvals for the project. Construction of the project, subject to approvals, is anticipated to commence in 2021.
