Celebrating Brisbane seniors

GOLD program - Fitness 4 Seniors

October is Queensland Seniors Month and it's the perfect time to honour grandparents, seniors, and elders in our lives.

From concerts in the suburbs to crafternoons in libraries, Brisbane City Council has a full program of Seniors Month activities, as well as special events for Grandparents Day on 29 October.

We also have a range of programs to support Brisbane seniors to come together, try new things, and catch up with friends all year round. Find something to do on the go by looking in the Brisbane App for a full list of Senior’s Months events.

Nurture a healthy mind and body

Our Growing Older Living Dangerously (GOLD) program is designed to help you improve fitness, feel healthier, learn new skills and make new friends.

Looking for a new challenge? Try stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, or kitesurfing. Our qualified instructors will ensure you have a safe and fun experience. For gentler movement, there is a range of yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates classes to improve your balance, build strength and relax your mind. There is even a special Bush Kindy program celebrating Grandparents Day happening at our Environment Centres.

If outdoor programs aren't for you, our libraries host a range of arts and craft classes to help unleash your creative side. Turn your story into a memoir with a life writing class or give your mind a workout with brain training. Learn printing techniques at a botanic printing workshop, or paint a floral artwork in a relaxed, friendly group session.

The 50 Plus Centre, located on the basement level of Brisbane City Hall, also offers a variety of low-cost activities for seniors and pensioners over 50. To find out what's on, view the 50 Plus Centre events calendar.

Explore the city for free

It's never been easier for seniors to get around Brisbane and explore the city. Seniors go card and Seniors Card +go users can travel for free on Council buses, CityCats and ferries from 8.30am-3.30pm and 7pm-6am weekdays, and on buses all weekend.

Use the opportunity to explore Brisbane like you’ve never seen it before. A specialised Seniors Greeters tour has been created for Seniors Month. The tours are shorter, at 60-90 minutes and take place on Tuesdays, wrapping up before the Seniors concerts in City Hall.

With so much to see and do, make sure you include free travel as part of your plans.

Need help to get to the shops for essentials such as grocery shopping or banking? Council Cabs is a low-cost, door-to-door taxi service for eligible seniors or anyone who is mobility impaired. To book a cab, phone 07 3403 2227.

Sing, dance and celebrate

Put your talents on show with the Lord Mayor's Seniors Cabaret - a free development program giving seniors the chance to hone their creative and artistic skills in workshops with industry professionals. See what it's all about and show your support by attending this year's Lord Mayor's Seniors Cabaret Gala, Dream, Believe, Achieve, on Sunday 22 October.

Celebrate the festive season at the Lord Mayor's Seniors Christmas Parties at City Hall from 4-8 December. Bring your friends along to enjoy light refreshments followed by a show featuring a range of entertainers performing traditional and contemporary Christmas songs to get you in the Christmas spirit.
