About the project
The Monier Road and Bellwood Street intersection accommodates approximately 15,000 vehicles per day, making it an important junction in Brisbane’s road network to connect to the Centenary Highway, Oxley Road and the Ipswich Motorway.
Between July 2016 and June 2021, the intersection recorded 12 crashes all of which resulted in medical treatment or hospitalisation. Eleven of the 12 incidents were crashes involving turning vehicles at the intersection who failed to stop or give way to oncoming traffic.
Poor sightlines, combined with the high number of heavy vehicles that use the intersection, make it difficult for motorists to determine safe opportunities to complete a turning movement.
Project details
To improve safety, we will install traffic lights at the intersection, with new north and southbound right-turn lanes on Bellwood Street and pedestrian crossing facilities. Other works will involve:
- widening the left-turn slip lane on Monier Road eastbound
- extending the left-turn slip lane on Monier Road westbound
- upgrading and realigning the pedestrian refuge on Monier Road, east of the intersection
- improving the road layout to allow safe movements for B-double vehicles
- installing new traffic islands and medians on Monier Road
- providing two-metre-wide on-road bike lanes along Monier Road
- upgrading footpaths, pram ramps and kerb and channel
- tree removal and landscaping.
The Monier Road and Bellwood Street intersection upgrade project is jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery program.
Construction Impacts
Works commenced in mid-December 2021 and will be completed mid-2022, weather and site conditions permitting. The majority of works will take place during the day from Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm.
Some night works will also be required when traffic volumes are lowest to minimise traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of workers and road users. These works will generally be undertaken from Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 5am.
Businesses and residents in proximity to the intersection may experience:
- increased noise from general construction activity
- increased truck movements
- low levels of vibration and dust
- temporary traffic changes including lane closures and reduced speed limits
- temporary detours for people walking and riding.
We will make every effort to minimise impacts to the local community and provide advance notification of particularly noisy works or out-of-hours activities.
Environmental impacts
To facilitate the project, we have identified 18 trees and shrubs that are required to be removed. All tree removal work will be carried out in accordance with relevant environmental guidelines and we will make every effort to minimise environmental impacts during construction. Seven trees will be planted within the vicinity of the project in accordance with Council policies and legislative requirements as well as financial offset.
Benefits
Once complete, the project will:
- improve safety for all road users by installing traffic lights and pedestrian crossing facilities
- improve travel time reliability and overall operation of intersection
- provide more active travel opportunities
- improve access to local shops, businesses and community facilities.
Project timing
- Start of construction – mid-December 2021
- End of construction – mid-2022.
