U-turn signage trial

From 28 March 2019, Brisbane City Council conducted a 12-month trial of new visual U-turn signage at six signalised intersections across Brisbane. The trial signage, which uses clear symbols, aimed to improve compliance and understanding of U-turn road rules.

This trial was a practical way of improving road safety by helping to decrease the number of illegal U-turns at signalised intersections and get you home quicker and safer. This trial also aligned with the safety principle that underpins Council’s Transport Plan for Brisbane – Strategic Directions.

Following completion of the trial, Council reviewed crash data, survey data and community feedback to evaluate the results. Analysis found the new sign design resulted in a decrease in instances of observed U-turn movements across all locations. The total number of reported crashes at these intersections and approaches has decreased. The new sign was proven to be more effective.

Due to its success, Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads have accepted the new sign design as an official Traffic Control sign, allowing its use across Queensland to help reduce illegal U-turn movements.
