Walkable Brisbane strategy

Living in a walkable city can have a direct impact on the quality of our lives. Many people walk specifically for recreation or exercise, but don’t often recognise that walking is also part of their journey when they catch the bus, drive to the shops or go to special events.
By creating well-designed, walkable neighbourhoods that connect a diverse mix of amenities and provide access to quality public transport, services and green spaces, Council can create a healthier, more vibrant and more sustainable Brisbane.
Walkable Brisbane is a key initiative of the Transport Plan for Brisbane - Implementation Plan 2018 and focuses on opportunities for Brisbane to be a city where more people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can choose to walk more often and where that choice results in a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Have your say
Council is seeking input from the community on the draft Walkable Brisbane strategy to understand community and stakeholder support for the proposed outcomes and directions and identify any further opportunities to improve walking in Brisbane.
Have your say on the proposed principles and outcomes and associated directions set out in the draft Walkable Brisbane strategy. The online survey will close by 11.59pm on Sunday 24 September 2023.
Following community and industry feedback, Council will publish the Walkable Brisbane strategy, including initiatives and actions Council will deliver to achieve our objectives.
About the strategy
The draft Walkable Brisbane strategy outlines Council’s directions to achieve our vision for Brisbane to be one of the world’s most walkable cities.
The strategy is underpinned by six strategic principles and outcomes, each with a range of directions for Council to pursue:

Inclusive
Walking is a viable option for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Fit-for-purpose
Streets and public spaces meet the needs of the people walking in them.

Safe
Walking is a safe travel option at all times of day and night.

Comfortable and enjoyable
Walking in Brisbane is a pleasant and appealing experience.

Connected and legible
Brisbane’s network of pathways and public spaces is easily navigated and connects residents and visitors to where they want to go.

Informed
Enhanced data collection and analysis will improve pedestrian planning and ensure that investment in walking programs and infrastructure is most effectively targeted.
Your feedback will help Council to deliver on our commitments in the Transport Plan for Brisbane - Strategic Directions and ensure everyone has an opportunity to have their say on Brisbane’s transport future.
