If you are having difficulty paying your rate account by the due date, contact Council to discuss available options.

Independent Rates Relief Tribunal

The Independent Rates Relief Tribunal gives Brisbane City Council debt relief to ratepayers in financial hardship. Financial hardship exists when ratepayers are unable to meet basic requirements, including food, clothing, medicine, accommodation and children's education. This hardship may occur as a result of illness, long-term unemployment or death of a partner.

This relief does not apply to owners of:

  • commercial or industrial properties
  • vacant land
  • more than one property
  • multiple dwellings.

You can apply to the Tribunal once every five years. All applications are assessed confidentially and on merit. To ensure a level of independence, the Tribunal members are not Council employees.

The Tribunal may recommend full payment, partial payment or non-payment of the debt.

To apply to the Tribunal or for more information about rates relief, contact Council.
