James Street safety improvements - Fortitude Valley

Link copied

We’re planning changes to James Street access from Doggett and Robertson Streets to improve safety.

Between 2017 and 2024, there were 8 crashes at the intersection. They caused one hospitalisation, 6 medical treatments and one minor injury. Of these, 6 included pedestrians or cyclists.

Restricting movements and upgrading walking and riding facilities will help reduce crash risks. These changes will make the intersection safer for everyone.

Works will include:

  • changing Doggett Street and Robertson Street to left out only
  • installing new traffic islands on Robertson Street and Doggett Street
  • extending the kerb out on 3 corners to allow for the new intersection layout
  • widening the on-road cycle lanes
  • upgrading the line marking and signage at the intersection.

This project is proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spots Program.

  • October 2025: Project introduction.
  • Mid-January 2026: Start of construction.
  • Mid-February 2026: End of construction.

From mid-January 2026, night works will run from 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday. This schedule reduces impacts on road users and pedestrians during peak periods.

During the works, you may experience:

  • increased noise, truck movements, low level vibration and dust
  • light from mobile light towers and flashing vehicle lights
  • changes in traffic conditions, including minor traffic delays, reduced speed limits and temporary lane closures.

Traffic management and signage will be onsite to direct people walking, riding and driving.
