Council is finalising rehabilitation works on the lagoon in the City Botanic Gardens, near the Alice Street entrance.

Completed rehabilitation works include:

  • emptying the pond by gradually pumping out and recycling water over the park, vegetation and lawns
  • desilting the lagoon
  • inspecting and repaired cracks
  • trimming invasive tree roots
  • installing a new sand bed and pond liners.

Final project works will include:

  • refilling the lagoon with water
  • repairing and reinstalling the aeration and fountain system.

During the refilling process, we will be treating the water, and you may notice the colour change from clear to green as it neutralises.

Prior to construction and during works, a fauna spotter and catcher is present to spot, catch and relocate aquatic life within the lagoon. Fauna will return to the lagoon once water testing is completed, and the environment has been re-established.

  • Late January 2025: Preparation works.
  • Late April 2025: Start of construction.
  • Mid-August 2025: Project completion.

Construction started in late April 2025 and is anticipated to be complete in mid-August 2025, weather and site conditions permitting.

Works are being undertaken 7am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. In the event of wet weather, works will occur on the next available working day(s) until works are complete.

If you visit, live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice an increase in odour, noise, dust and truck movements.

While we refill the lagoon with water, you may notice a change in colour from clear to green as we treat the water, and it becomes neutralised.

Traffic control will be on site to assist people moving through the area with detour signage in place.

The garden gates will remain open with an exclusion zone near the lagoon and on Alice Street.

We will make every effort to minimise disruption to park users and the wider community during these works.
