Naming parks, tracks and facilities in Brisbane

Naming local parks, tracks and facilities helps to celebrate history and community contributions, recognise connections and honour individuals.

You can apply to name a park, track or facility after an:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander name
  • historic event
  • element of the local environment, such as a native species or landscape feature
  • individual or family that:
    • has a significant historical connection with the city or local area
    • has made a meaningful social, economic, sporting or cultural contribution to the city
    • is widely recognised and respected within the local community, of good standing and not subject to controversy.

Note

Parks, tracks and facilities are generally named after a person who has passed away. Names of living people are considered in exceptional circumstances.

What you need to provide
1 Applicant details

You must provide:

  • contact details, including a name, phone number and email address
  • business details such as an Australian Business Number (ABN) and enitity name (if applicable)
  • a postal address.
2 Location information

Let us know the location of the park or track, including the suburb, postcode and street name.

You can also include any additional details that may help identify the location.

3 Proposal details

Provide the proposed name for the park, track or facility.

If proposing the name of a person or family, they must:

  • be highly significant, with lengthy and distinguished civic service
  • have a recognised historical link to, or have made a substantial and outstanding social or civic contribution to the cultural, political, economic or social life of, Brisbane or the local area
  • have been located, lived or served in Brisbane or the local area for a minimum of 10 years
  • be widely known and respected in the community
  • have made a significant contribution to the community for 2 or more generations (for families).

You must provide:

  • what the proposed name is related to (e.g. a person or family, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander name, a historic event or endemic species)
  • evidence of any consultation that has occurred and support you have for the proposed naming. This may include written notification with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples or consultation with family relatives, community members or a local councillor.
4 Supporting documents

Provide documents that support your application, such as:

  • copies of historical documents or transcripts
  • published journal articles, copies of original published photographs and a full reference list of original sources (articles, journal papers, photographs, etc.) on which the submission is based
  • letters of endorsement, including a letter of consent from family members or by the relevant custodians of the land (if required).
