About the project

We are undertaking survey and investigation works to confirm ground conditions and identify existing underground services to inform a design to upgrade the stormwater drainage on Albert Street between Charlotte and Margaret Streets, as well as potential upgrades on Margaret Street in the future.

The drainage network on this section of Albert Street was constructed in the 1880s and was designed to the drainage standards of the day.

This upgrade is part of our commitment to protect and improve our existing infrastructure to ensure it remains functional into the future. Upgrading this drainage will extend the capacity and life of the existing stormwater network and help manage rainfall and overland flow in this low-lying area of the CBD catchment.

Timing

The survey and investigation works will start on 28 March 2021 and are expected to be completed mid-April 2022, weather and site conditions permitting.

The works will take place at night from 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

Council will provide advance notice to the community if any additional out-of-hours works are required, prior to works starting.

Impacts during construction

The works will involve saw cutting small sections of the road and then vacuum excavating to confirm ground conditions and physically locate existing underground services (e.g., water supply, sewer, gas, NBN).

Surveyors will also be on site using handheld equipment to locate underground services via radar.

The works will also include progressively reinstating the road surface using compaction equipment once investigation works are completed.

During construction, you can expect:

  • noise, dust and increased vehicle movements, with reversing beepers and flashing lights in the area
  • minor traffic delays, with possible lane closures that may impact on-street parking.

Traffic controllers will be onsite to direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Footpaths will remain accessible at all times.

Council values your patience and cooperation while we undertake the works.
