Survey results

We opened a survey to hear from you about the proposed upgrade to improve safety for all road users at the intersection. We would like to thank everyone who completed the online survey or contacted the project team directly to share your feedback. The project team has now analysed the feedback received and our key findings are outlined below.

We received more than 145 responses through the online survey and emails to the project team. Majority of respondents live in Jamboree Heights or Mount Ommaney and use the intersection daily and at all different times of the day.

  • 62% of survey respondents support the installation of traffic lights with controlled crossing facilities.
  • 66% of survey respondents walk or ride through the intersection, and of this group, over half feel unsafe crossing at the intersection.
  • 91% of respondents drive across Dandenong Road, and of this group, 65% find it difficult or feel unsafe doing so.

The survey results and feedback provided from the local community reveal a need to ensure a safer intersection for all road users.

As part of our commitment to deliver the projects communities want and need, the proposed upgrade to this intersection will proceed to construction.

About the project

We are upgrading the Dandenong Road, Sirocco Street and Central Avenue intersection to improve safety and access for all road users, improve the operation of the intersection and enhance active transport options.

The project features included as part of this project are:

  • installing traffic lights to fully control vehicle movements through the intersection.
  • Installing signalised pedestrian crossing facilities across all lengths of the intersection
  • removing the northbound left-turn slip lane on Dandenong Road.
  • constructing a new raised zebra crossing across the eastbound left-turn slip lane on Central Avenue
  • upgrading existing centre medians on Dandenong Road, Central Avenue, and Loffs Road
  • extending the southbound bike lane on Dandenong Road through the intersection
  • upgrading the surrounding kerb and footpaths, including new kerb ramps
  • installing new asphalt, line marking and minor landscaping works.

The Dandenong Road, Sirocco Street and Central Avenue intersection upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program and Brisbane City Council.

Project benefits

The intersection is currently an unsignalised, priority-controlled intersection, with priority running on Dandenong Road. There are no dedicated crossing facilities for people walking and riding and accessing local bus stops. Being unsignalised, people driving also find it difficult to cross Dandenong Road from local streets.

The upgrade at the intersection aims to introduce the following benefits:

  • improve safety for all road users by installing traffic lights with signalised crossing facilities to control movements through the intersection
  • improve safety and minimise queue lengths for vehicles exiting Central Avenue and Sirocco Street into Dandenong Road by controlling vehicle movements with the new signalised intersection
  • improve connectivity and safety for people walking and riding with signalised crossing points on all intersection approaches and a wombat crossing on the Central Avenue left-turn slip lane into Dandenong Road
  • enhance active transport options by allowing safer and easier connectivity to local bus stops, shopping centres and community facilities
  • improve safety for people walking and riding across Central Avenue by replacing the left-turn slip lane on Dandenong Road with a controlled left-turn arrow
  • improve drainage at the intersection and on Dandenong Road by upgrading and installing new stormwater pipes and pits.

Start of construction

Works commenced in March 2024 and are expected to be complete in late 2024, weather and site conditions permitting. Construction activities will take place at night between 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday.

Every effort will be made to complete particularly noisy works prior to 11pm, where possible. At times, some construction works may be required to take place during the day, between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Council will provide advance notification of any particularly impactful works required throughout the construction period.

What to expect during construction

During the works, residents and businesses near the intersection may at times experience:

  • increased noise, truck movements, low level vibration and dust
  • light from mobile light towers and flashing vehicle lights
  • changes in traffic conditions, including minor traffic delays, reduced speed limits, temporary road and lane closures.

Council will make every effort to minimise impacts to the local community. Traffic management and signage will be onsite to direct people walking, riding and driving through the area. Council will continue to monitor traffic and construction conditions throughout the project and make adjustments where required.

Council is committed to keeping the local community informed and will provide more information during construction. We value your patience and cooperation while we complete these important works.

Temporary bus relocation

During construction, temporary relocation of the two bus stops at the intersection will be required.

  • Bus stop ID 005300 has been temporarily relocated 340m to the existing inbound district stop on Dandenong Road, opposite Spinnaker Street.
  • Bus stop ID 005301 has been temporarily relocated 180m to the existing outbound district stop on the corner of Dandenong Road and Spinnaker Street.

Signage is in place to direct patrons.

Site compound

The site compound and laydown area to store materials and machinery will be established within Lorikeet Park north of the intersection.
