About the project
Nudgee Waterhole Reserve is classified as park with sport, nature conservation and general recreation functions. The site includes a spring-fed waterhole, picnic area, melaleuca forest with walkways, dog off-leash area, and sporting fields with a clubhouse leased by Banyo Rugby League Club. It also has exceptional aboriginal cultural heritage significance, containing archaeological relics and one of only two remaining intact aboriginal bora rings in Brisbane.
During the 2014-2019 construction works of the Gateway Upgrade North project by Department of Transport and Main Roads, a portion of land was resumed from the southern end of Nudgee Waterhole Park. Car parking, a barbecue and picnic facilities were removed, as well as significant areas of vegetation.
The Nudgee Waterhole Reserve project plans to reinstate these park facilities and vegetation. In addition, Council will be providing playground facilities for families with young children to enjoy. Council has consulted and will continue to engage with Traditional Custodians to ensure that proposed works respect the cultural heritage values.
Nudgee Waterhole Reserve reinstatement and upgrade works will include:
- a new car park adjacent to the existing dog off-leash area accessed from Nudgee Road
- new picnic facilities including a shelter, seating and barbecue
- new playground with nature-based play elements
- extensive revegetation to provide a green buffer from Gateway Motorway and provide shade for users of the new path along Nudgee Road and Childs Road.
The project is funded by Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.
The Northgate Office will be supporting a Stage 2 project, to incorporate traditional artwork at this site.
Nudgee Waterhole Reserve reinstatement and upgrade works will be delivered in three phases:
- Phase 1 (Late 2020): Concept Design
- Phase 2 (Late 2020 – early 2021): Detailed design and approvals
- Phase 3 (Early-mid 2021): Procurement and delivery.
