The modern botanic garden has its origin in the monastic gardens of the Medieval period. Such gardens included a section for medicinal plants - called the herbularis or hortus medicus.
Eventually, these became medicinal plant gardens, specifically used for teaching purposes. Physic gardens, as they were known, were used to train apprentice apothecaries - the pharmacists of their time. Apothecaries were an important part of Elizabethan society, offering general medical advice and treatments made from herbs and other botanicals.
Join Lady Anne of Woodland Manor (and a member of the Queensland Herb Society) as she walks you through our Physic Garden and discusses the herbs growing there and their uses during the Elizabethan era.
Requirements: Please wear a hat, enclosed walking shoes; and bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Walks may be subject to environmental conditions and presenter capacity on the day.
Location: Meet at the Shakespeare in the Gardens information marquee.
