About the project

This project involves:

  • digging a hole approximately 4.5 metres deep and lowering a tunnel boring machine (TBM) into it
  • boring a tunnel 140m long, 450 millimetres in diameter and installing a new sewerage pipe
  • constructing four new sewer manholes in Bridge Street
  • reconnecting the new sewer pipe to the adjacent businesses on Bridge Street
  • connecting the new sewer pipe to the existing sewer main on Wickham Street.

Project update

Construction commenced in April 2021and was expected to be completed late October 2021. After encountering high strength rock underground the project team confirmed a larger, more powerful TBM was required to continue tunnelling activity and install new sewer pipes.

Council is working to procure a more powerful TBM as soon as possible to complete these works, however this will take some time. In the meantime, the site will be vacated and traffic will be reinstated to Bridge Street, until works can recommence in mid-2022.

Construction impacts

Council will reinstate Bridge Street to traffic until the tunnelling works can recommence. Onsite compounds in Bridge Street will be removed and the road reinstated. The reinstatement works will be completed by 12 November 2021, subject to weather conditions.

Council thanks you for your patience and understanding as we progress these important works to improve Fortitude Valley’s drainage capacity and meet the future needs of your area.
