About the project

The Australian Government Black Spot Program is part of the National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to improve road safety by implementing upgrade measures at each black spot location to reduce the risk of crashes.

This intersection was identified as a location requiring safety improvements, with 11 recorded crashes between 2016 and 2023. Six of the 11 recorded crashes involved vehicles turning right from Macrossan Avenue into Bennetts Road.

New raised zebra crossings on the slip lanes have improved safety by promoting slower speeds and increased driver awareness. Adjusting the right turn signals, from Crown Street into Bennetts Road, to solid green and red arrows, and removing the right turn from Macrossan Avenue into Bennetts Road, has improved safety for all road users.

This project was fully funded by the Australian Government through the 2023-24 Black Spot Program.

Project benefits

  • Improved traffic flow and safety for all road users by controlling the turning movements through the intersection.
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety and connectivity by installing raised zebra crossings on the left turn slip lanes to improve driver awareness and reduce vehicle speeds.
  • Improved drainage at the intersection by installing a new stormwater gully.
