About the project

The Walter Taylor Bridge provides a key transport link across Coonan Street, Indooroopilly and Honour Avenue, Chelmer, to and from Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. As part of Brisbane City Council’s maintenance program, we will undertake essential repairs on the Walter Taylor Bridge to maintain the structure and safe access for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Works will include:

  • bridge joints replacement
  • footpath works
  • bridge maintenance
  • bridge, road, and footpath closures.

Equipment and machinery, including lighting towers, and tools including jackhammers and grinders will be used to complete the works.

Project update

The Walter Taylor Bridge closure has been scheduled for Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May 2024, weather and maintenance conditions permitting. These works are required at night, when traffic volumes are lowest. The project will be rescheduled to Monday 27 May to Friday 31 May 2024 from 9pm to 5am, if works are impacted by poor weather or maintenance conditions. No work will occur on Friday night.

Work hours

Work will be undertaken during night work hours of 9pm and 5am, Monday to Friday when traffic volumes on the bridge are lowest, and to ensure the safety of workers and road users.

Works will be completed by 5am, Friday 24 May 2024. No work will occur on Friday night.

What the community can expect

To complete these works as quickly and safely as possible, the following temporary traffic changes will be required during project work hours only.

Full bridge closure (inclusive of road and footpath)

From Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May 2024, both the northbound and southbound lanes will be closed from 9pm to 5am.

During this time, designated detour routes will be in place for motorists travelling through the area. Motorists should consider this as part of any travel plans. The roadway will be reopened outside of work hours.

The following surrounding roads will be closed:

  • Honour Avenue (from Bridge Street)
  • Wharf Street (from Rosebery Terrace, access residents on Rosebery Terrace and Wharf Street will be maintained)

  • Coonan Street (southbound from Westminster onwards)
  • Radnor Street
  • Riverview Terrace (partial closure turning lanes – inbound access maintained)

Full footpath closure

The footpath on the bridge and footpath under the bridge will be closed during work hours. Pedestrians and cyclists’ access will be via Jack Pesch Bridge. The footpath will be reopened outside of work hours.

Queensland Police Service (QPS), traffic control and signage, including variable message signs (VMS) will be in place to direct motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists of changed traffic conditions.

The public should follow all the signs and directions on site for safety. Please refer to temporary detour routes map.

Nearby residents and pedestrian users will experience increased and persistent noise, lighting, dust and vehicle movements in the area. We value your patience and cooperation while we undertake this important work.

Jack Pesch Bridge Emergency Services Vehicle Access

During project hours emergency services vehicles, six tonne and under and two metres and less wide, may access the bridge while responding to emergency incidents.
