Valley Special entertainment precinct background

Fortitude Valley (the Valley) is one of Brisbane's most popular entertainment hubs. The Valley is well known for its atmosphere filled with live music, nightclubs and arts.

It is also home to a variety of restaurants, cafes, commercial businesses and residential buildings. All these contribute to the Valley's mixed-use community and diversity of visitors.

The Valley has produced some of Australia's most talented artists and performers. Brisbane City Council recognises the importance of supporting the Valley to help develop local live music of all types and styles. It also supports the continuation of the Valley as a mixed-use community.

Council and the Queensland Government amended noise and planning laws to create the Fortitude Valley Special entertainment precinct. This will allow the needs of the music venues to be balanced with the needs of residents and other commercial operators.

The Fortitude Valley Neighbourhood Plan sets out the boundaries of the Special entertainment precinct in Figure a - Special entertainment area of Brisbane City Plan 2014 (City Plan 2014). The Special entertainment area is taken to be a Special Entertainment Precinct for the purposes of the Local Government Act 2009.

New residential development (including backpacker's accommodation and hotels) in the area need to incorporate high levels of noise insulation to reduce the transmission of low frequency bass noise into bedrooms.

New amplified music venues will also have to include music noise controls to comply with the Special entertainment precinct music noise levels.
