Kindy Active Travel pilot program

The Kindy Active Travel pilot program expands on the award-winning Active School Travel (AST) program and supports making active travel easier for kindergartens and their communities.

In 2023, Kindy Active Travel program is being piloted in two Brisbane kindergartens using the successful model and principles of the Active School Travel program to give kindergarten children and their families the skills and experiences to engrain active travel behaviours before they transition to primary school. Following the pilot, Council will evaluate the program and determine next steps in 2024.

The Kindy Active Travel program will use a fun and engaging range of activities to increase children’s road safety awareness, bike and scooter skills and active travel knowledge to practically support increases in active travel to kindy.

With school travel trips making up one in four car trips during morning peak hour in Brisbane, every active travel journey to kindy and school can make a difference for our community.

The Kindy Active Travel program trial is a Brisbane City Council initiative and is proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.
