Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha facilities and services
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha open daily. Opening hours are 8am-6pm in summer (September to March) and 8am-5pm in winter (April to August). There are numerous picnic areas available throughout the gardens. Dogs are not permitted in the gardens.
The Mt Coot-tha Visitor Information Centre will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Access to the botanic gardens via pedestrian entrances will remain open to the public 365 days per year.
The gardens include the Queensland Herbarium, Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Mt Coot-tha Library and Gardens Café. Each of these facilities has its own opening hours.
The Queensland Herbarium is the centre for research and information on Queensland flora, vegetation and plant communities.
Herbarium staff are involved in the discovery and naming of around 30 newly discovered Queensland plant species each year.
The Herbarium holds about 830,000 preserved plant specimens in its collection. The species are mainly from Queensland and represent more than 245 years of history.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens also offers a limited, free plant identification service. You can take your plant specimens to the reception area of the Gardens' Administration building for identification. Plant specimens need to include leaves with flowers and/or fruit.
You will need to complete a Request for Plant Identification form when you deliver the specimens.
The collection at the Mt Coot-tha Library includes books and magazines on horticulture, natural science, botany, environmental and astronomy topics.
Located in the administration building, the library is open:
- Tuesday to Thursday - 10am to 4pm
- Friday, Sunday and Monday - 10am to 3pm
- Saturday - 9am to 4pm.
The botanic gardens are a great place for picnics. Facilities include picnic tables and seats in shaded areas. There are also toilets and drinking fountains located throughout the gardens. There are no barbecue facilities in the gardens. The Kitchen in the Gardens cooking facilities are for the exclusive use of garden workshops only.
Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium
The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is Queensland's largest planetarium. It provides an important educational resource for adults and children. The planetarium feature a range of astronomical shows and displays. Ticket prices apply.
Botanic Gardens Café
The Botanic Gardens Café sits among the botanic gardens with a deck overlooking the lake.
The Gardens Café opens daily serving hot and cold drinks, light snacks and meals.
The café's opening hours are:
- Monday to Friday - 8am to 4pm
- Saturday to Sunday - 7am to 5pm.
The kitchen closes daily at 3pm.
