About the project

The construction works will involve lifting the manhole covers primarily in Helen Street, and carrying out work underground to clear the existing pipelines and prepare them for relining, installing and sealing the new liners at the access chamber entrances.

Timing

The works started in late June 2019 and are expected to be completed in early August 2019, weather and site conditions permitting. Construction will primarily take place between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday. While Council will work to minimise the occurrence of work outside these hours, it may be necessary when works cannot be safely carried out during the day. Prior notification will be provided ahead of out-of-hours works, where possible.

Impacts during construction

The relining will be undertaken via the existing manholes located along Helen Street. There will be no excavation in the road and the work site area will be minimal.

During construction, properties in close proximity to the work may experience construction noise, dust and vibrations. This will be monitored and every effort will be made to minimise any impact on the local community. For the safety of workers, pedestrians and cyclists, the work area will be fenced for the duration of works. Due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.

Temporary lane closures on both Helen Street and Commercial Road near Helen Street will be required during the construction to facilitate the work. Vehicle access into Helen Street from Skyring Terrace and Commercial Road will be maintained at all times. On-street parking will also be temporarily removed adjacent to the manholes when they are being accessed.

Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to safely direct road users around the site. Motorists may experience some delays as they move through the area and Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Access to residential car parks will remain open, advance notification will be provided should any access impacts arise.

Once complete, these works will improve the drainage system by stabilising the drain and minimising potential flooding impacts. Council is committed to keeping local residents informed of construction activities in their area and will provide advance notification of activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period. Council would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during these important works to improve the drainage capacity of the area.
