About the project

As part of this project, Council will be upgrading a section of road including:

  • improving the shared footpath and centre median islands
  • formalising kerbs
  • formalising road line marking
  • landscaping and turfing.

Works are anticipated to begin in mid July 2020 and be completed in late 2020, weather and site conditions permitting.

Project details

Works will generally involve:

  • constructing a new 1.8 metre-wide on-road bike lane on the westbound side of Manly Road, between New Cleveland Road and Wondall Road
  • upgrading an approximate 500-metre section of shared path to be 2.5 metres wide
  • relocating and upgrading the inbound and outbound bus stops
  • realigning centre median islands
  • installing new road kerbs
  • road line marking
  • removing some trees and vegetation
  • turfing and landscaping works.

Impacts during construction

Works will generally be undertaken between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. When required, works may be undertaken at night between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday, when traffic volumes are lowest and to ensure the safety of workers onsite. Traffic controllers will be onsite to assist motorists and pedestrians through the work site.

The local community may experience increased traffic movements, along with low levels of construction noise, dust and vibration. For the safety of workers onsite, reversing lights and indicators cannot be switched off.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community during these works. Council is committed to keeping local residents informed and will provide advance notification of any works likely to cause increased disruption.

A small site laydown area will be established in close proximity to the work area, on the corner of New Cleveland Road and Manly Road in Wakerley. This area will be reinstated following the completion of these works.

Bus stop impacts

The inbound bus stop #6101, Manly Rd at Nestle Inn (stop 52/46) will be relocated approximately 40 metres towards New Cleveland Road. The outbound bus stop #6102, Manly Rd at Nestle Inn (stop 46/52), will be relocated approximately 40 metres towards Wondall Road.

The relocation of these bus stops prioritises network efficiency, sightlines, safety and bus movements as well as meeting accessibility requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002.

While works on the bus stops are carried out, temporary bus stops will be in place.

Pedestrian detours

The pedestrian footpath on the southern side of Manly Road, along the reserve, will be temporarily closed while the works are completed. Signed detours and traffic control will be in place to assist pedestrians around the work site safely. Temporary access will be provided to the bus stops to ensure bus patrons are still able to use these stops during the works.

Tree and vegetation impacts

Council has identified up to 50 trees and vegetation in the area that need to be removed to facilitate the works. The trees for removal include 11 small trees, 28 medium trees and 11 large trees.

All work will be carried out in accordance with the relevant environmental guidelines and Council will make every effort to minimise environmental impacts during the works. Vegetation impacts will be offset in accordance with Council policies and relevant legislative requirements.
