Monthly construction update - Main Street and Deakin Street connection

February 2024

Brisbane City Council is delivering the Main Street and Deakin Street connection as part of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge to enhance safe walking and riding connections between Kangaroo Point and the CBD. Works to create the new Story Bridge underpass and new pathways on Deakin Street will continue in February 2024.

The Main Street and Deakin connection will improve walking and riding travel times and travel reliability by providing a direct route from Deakin Street and the eastern suburbs to the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge.

Construction

Construction activities for the Main Street and Deakin Street connection in February 2024 will include:

  • ongoing construction of the new pedestrian and bike path from the Thornton Street tunnel along Deakin Street to the new Story Bridge underpass
  • works to complete the new kerb and channel on Deakin Street
  • concrete pours for the new underpass flooring
  • installing street lighting and electrical infrastructure on Main Street and in the Story Bridge underpass
  • constructing the new connection from Main Street to the Story Bridge underpass.

What to expect

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may notice:

  • localised traffic changes including reduced speed limits and short-term traffic disruptions including:
    • stop/go traffic control on Main Street and Deakin Street during construction hours
  • temporary path closures and detours with signage and traffic controllers onsite during works to direct pedestrians and cyclists around the work area
  • temporary work areas established to safely undertake the works
  • construction noise, vibration and dust from machinery, including concrete saws, rock breakers and trucks
  • increased truck movements through the area to deliver machinery and materials.

Working hours

Construction will generally be undertaken from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 7am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Some out-of-hours works may be required to help minimise traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of pedestrians, motorists and workers. Advance notice will be provided for any planned out-of-hours works.
